First overland mail to California (in wagon train led by Col. Chiles, 1848); notes on early days in El Dorado Co.; James W. Marshall; sales and transfers to Sutter's Fort and Sutter's Mill; ferry on the American River. With typed transcripts and transcript of advertisement, Alta California, Apr. 6, 1849, for Sutter House and freighting company operated by Alden S. Bayley and M.T. McClellan in Sacramento.

California Pioneer. Arrived in California in 1845. He selected site for Sutter's Mill at Coloma in May, 1847, and served as superintendent. Marshall discovered gold at Coloma January 24, 1848.
